THE NEED FOR LARGE HERBIVORESIN FRENCH & EUROPEAN ECOSYSTEMS

The first goal was to demonstrate the need for the presence of large wild herbivores in French and European ecosystems. We were the first to do so, followed by the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Croatia, and most recently in Germany (2013).

The spectacular improvement of the natural environment demonstrates, the importance of the large numbers of wild animals. They alone are capable, thanks to their adaptability to the harsh conditions, of enhancing a meadow or a forest. Better, they enrich it because they can use all the plants available from the poorest areas to the richest legumes, unlike domestic ungulate.

WILD FAUNAAS A DRIVER FOR SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

The second goal is to use wildlife as a driver for sustainable economic activities.

Species are disappearing at such a rate that the survival of large European fauna is in question. In Europe, one in six mammal species is threatened with extinction and one in three is in decline. Per instance the Pyrenean ibex (Capra pyrenaica) died out in 2000 in France and Spain!

However, the end of some agricultural sites frees up spaces. The return of large fauna would represent a very interesting solution for the maintenance of these fragile areas of new economic activities, respectful of the environment. The Monts d’Azur Reserve is an example.

A PILOT PROJECT FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM IN FRANCEECO-FRIENDLY HOUSING

Finally, the Animal Reserve of the Mont d’Azur project is largely based on a simple mantra: ecotourism and vacations are not incompatible as long as a new form of sustainable and responsible tourism is developed.

We must encourage people to consider their vacations differently, but we must also be able to welcome the tourists in great conditions.

This is why our project is one of the pioneers of ecotourism as ethical and ecological travel.
